It's 1894 in a small Pennsylvania town when Colette Mayweather realizes her childhood crush has become a deeper love. Suffering from a great loss changes the once lively and musical pace of Swan Manor to a melancholy, silent place. Colette finds solace playing amongst the fields, dancing along the river and climbing trees. Her older sister, Winifred, can only be cruel to Colette. Her two younger sisters are often forced together, brushed aside by Father and taken care of solely by Nanny Melanie. Having been left alone, Colette dedicates much of her time to God. She begins to fall for her old friend, Rudy, a stable and field hand Father hired when Rudy was just a boy and teach him the Bible. A series of unfortunate events sends Colette to Finishing School, far away from her family and Rudy when they need her most.
